Optical Properties of Materials

The course covers the optical physics of solid state materials. In the first part it treats basic optical properties of materials, including optical propagation, reflectivity, the treatment of absorption and luminescence for different materials. The phenomena are illustrated by discussing the optical properties of insulators, semiconductors, and metals, including nanostructures designed to give specific optical functionalities. Theories and models are introduced to describe the optical properties of materials. A short introduction to nonlinear properties is given. The course focuses on applications of optical materials for solar cells, light emitting system, and optical sensors.
