Foreign Exchange Students Program with Massachusetts Maritime Academy
According to the cooperation memo signed by SMU and Massachusetts Maritime Academy, our college will select several undergraduates to continue their study in the US. Here are the rules on selection procedure. :
1. 5 Undergraduates will be selected from Ocean Environment and Engineering College, within less than 3 female students.
2. The whole semester in the first half of the year will be spent in the US, usually from the February 20th to the June 20th. All lessons will be taught in English.
3. Conditions of the Candidates
1. Candidates should meet the requirements involved listed in the Interim Regulations on the Studying overseas Program Management for Undergraduates of SMU. Each candidate should be healthy physically, with good academic results and high overall competence. The GPA is expected to be above 2.7.
2.The marks gained in the TOEFL of original marking standard should reach at least 520, which is equivalent to 68 in the TOFEL with new marking standard (Internet-based test).
3.The certificate of more than 30000yuan deposit should be produced
4.Private Purpose Passport is needed.
4.Payments should be made by the students without tuition fees, boarding and lodging fees which have been exempted.
1.International Traveling Expense: About 10000yuan.
2.Insurance fees: $ 699.
3.Expenditure for Passport and Visa: 200yuan and 930yuan respectively.
4.Expense of SEVIS: $ 180.
5.Uniform offered by the Academy for spring, summer and winter, and the overall for shipping: About 2000yuan.
The total expenditure reaches 20000yuan.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA), founded in 1891,is one of the most time-honored maritime academies in the United States. With a great number of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including International Shipping Management, Navigation Technology, Emergency Management, Equipment Engineering, Maritime Safety and Environmental Protection, and Ocean Shipping. It is the requirement of the Academy that all students should spend a certain amount of time on shipping internship. If the undergraduates perform well during the study overseas, Shanghai Scholarship for Studying abroad can be applied, the total sum of which covers a range of 10000 to 30000yuan.

2. Introduction to the Program
1.Pattern of Cooperation
Those undergraduates, major in Environmental Engineering and Safety Engineering, who have finished their undergraduate courses in the first two years can continue their study in undergraduate courses and participate in other teaching process in the following two years in Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Graduation shall be allowed and diploma shall be awarded by SMU provided that the courses listed in the Major Teaching Plan are properly finished, the total number of credits meets the requirements listed in the above mentioned plan, and the moral, academic and physical conditions are satisfactory. Meanwhile, those graduates can also be awarded bachelor degree of SMU and MMA if they meet the terms concerned stipulated by SMU.
2. Payment for Study abroad
(1) The sum that should be paid to the MMA reaches $33660 per year. (Tuition Fees, Board and Lodging, and Insurance included)
(2) The sum that should be paid to SMU is the half that of the first two years.
3. Conditions of Candidate
(1) The candidate should be patriotic and moral, without breaking laws and regulations.
(2) The candidate should be capable of living well independently and adapted to the study and life abroad.
(3) The marks of TOEFL should reach 520 or the marks of Internet-based test reach 68.
(4)The candidate should have gained the credits required by SMU in the first two years, without failing any examination in the SMU. GPA should be above 2.7.
