I. Program Introduction

The Master Program of Harbor, Coastal and Offshore Engineering is part of the first grade discipline of master degree in Hydraulic Engineering at Shanghai Maritime University. The program, which is the key discipline at Shanghai Maritime University specializing in Port Engineering Structures, Geotechnical Engineering, Ocean Engineering Structures, Port Engineering Planning, Analysis of Ocean Engineering Flow Field and Ocean Environmental Planning and Management, started to admit students in fall, 2004. The department has 14 teachers including 7 professors and 3 associate professors.12 teachers have the Doctor’s (Postdoctoral) degree. The department is equipped with experimental devices for research and the corresponding analysis software and has undertaken the National Natural Science Foundation projects, sub-tasks of National 863 projects and many provincial and city level projects. The department also has been awarded the provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress awards and the copyrights of literature publishing, paper publishing, patents and computer software. The students are mainly employed in Navigation Channel, Coastal and Ocean Engineering projects, by the universities and colleges of Ocean Engineering, enterprises and public institutions of engineering design, engineering construction and engineering supervision, and departments of related education, technology management and administrative management.

I. Brief Introduction to the Subject

Marine Transportation Engineering Materials and Protection, as the secondary discipline of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, is one of the key majors in Shanghai Maritime University. There is a highly-regarded teaching and research faculty including 3 distinguished professors and 7 associate professors, some of whom are honored as Shanghai Shuguang Scholars and Shanghai Chengguang Scholars. Relying on the Advanced Instrumental Analysis Center in our college, which covers 2,000 m2, possessing a variety of world’s leading instruments for materials preparation, processing and analysis with total value up to more than 30 million RMB, this discipline obtained the qualification to cultivate the graduate students and award the master degree. Our discipline took up tens of research projects from National Natural Science Foundations of China (NNSFCs), Ministry of Science and Technology, Shanghai municipality, Ministry of Transport, and published about 100 scientific papers indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP. Our college has actively conducted international and domestic cooperation in the related field with universities, enterprises and research institutes by participating in international academic conferences, collaborative researchinvestigations and training programs. Several bases about producing, learning and researching were set up for the students. This discipline is an interdisciplinary of materials and marine science, exhibiting three characteristics as follows: Studying on the preparation, processing, and failure of marine materials; Investigating the relationship between the properties and structure of marine materials; Cultivating senior talents for marine materials science.

II. Educational Goal

This discipline aims at cultivating the high-quality comprehensive talent for marine materials and engineering. The person who is granted master degree should satisfy the criteria as follows: (1) Mastering the solid theoretical foundation and professional knowledge in material science and engineering; (2) Having the capability to do the R&D and solve the practical problems in engineering; (3) Mastering a foreign language; (4) Mastering the analytical methods of chemical compositions and macrostructures for marine materials; (5) Understanding the current situation and future trend of the subject and the latest development of relevant fields; (6) Doing the creative research independently; (7) Having a certain organizing ability, affinity, and strong sense of teamwork.
