In the golden October, on the shore of the East China Sea, the campus of Shanghai Maritime University is wrapped in warmth. On October 17, the College of Marine Science and Engineering welcomed alumni of the Environmental Engineering Class of 2006 for their 20th anniversary homecoming event. After twenty years apart, nearly thirty alumni traveled across distances to return to their alma mater. They toured the campus, visited former teachers, rekindled classmate bonds, and discussed the new chapter of the college’s development.
The alumni checked in at the College Building, received commemorative T-shirts and souvenirs, and paused before the photo wall to view old pictures, reliving their youthful college days. Afterwards, they toured the building in person, witnessing the new upgrades to the college’s learning environment and research platforms and recalling their own study years. Moving to the Haiqin Building canteen, they savored the classic chicken leg rice, revisiting familiar campus flavors and sharing life stories amid warm, down-to-earth moments.
At the alumni forum, Dean Feng Daolun extended a warm welcome to all returning alumni on behalf of the college and expressed sincere gratitude for their long-standing concern for its development. He briefly updated them on the latest progress in disciplinary development and talent training, and hoped that alumni would continue to care for and support the college’s growth. Lü Baoyi, Director of the Environmental Engineering Department, also welcomed the alumni and invited them to come back often to renew the bonds between teachers and classmates. Teacher representatives including Shi Hong, Lan Yan, Liao Dexiang, Liu Xingpo, Wei Fang and Su Penghao recalled old teaching stories. They expressed delight at the alumni’s achievements in all walks of life and sent best wishes for their continued progress.
Each alumnus took turns sharing updates on their work and life and memories of campus study, filled with gratitude for their alma mater and teachers.
Following the forum, a series of parallel themed activities began. In the laboratories of the College Building, alumni took part in hands-on fun experiments, bringing back fond memories of practical training during their studies. In Meeting Room 410, alumni Wang Yuwei and Shen Xufeng sat down with current student representatives. Drawing on their professional experience, they shared insights and passed on valuable advice to young students. Meanwhile, in Meeting Room 408, alumni chatted leisurely with retired faculty members of the Environmental Engineering Department, reminiscing about classes of years ago and cherishing the deep teacher-student friendship.
With sea breeze brushing their faces and old friends reunited, every warm moment holds twenty years of longing. Two decades have passed, yet their original aspiration rooted in Shanghai Maritime University remains unchanged. This homecoming is not only a long-awaited reunion of youth, but also a mutual rendezvous between alumni and their alma mater. Alumni are precious assets of the college. The college always welcomes alumni to come back home, stand side by side to ride the waves, and stride toward a broader promising future facing the blue ocean.
