Recently, the events of the 15th National College Students' Metallographic Skills Competition, guided by the Teaching Steering Committee for Materials Majors of Institutions of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, have successfully concluded. Relying on solid professional knowledge, outstanding practical capabilities and distinctive innovative awareness, the team from Shanghai Maritime University obtained awards across all three competition tracks, winning 1 first prize, 2 second prizes and 8 third prizes in total.

Under the careful guidance of the supervising teacher team from the College of Marine Science and Engineering, including An Liqiong, Fan Chunhua, Guo Yanbing, Liu Boyang and Zhou Yun, the participating students demonstrated sound professional literacy and superb practical skills in the finals. After fierce competition, in Track 1 (Skills Competition), Zhang Jiepei won the individual second prize, while Sun Hao, Zhao Haixin, Chen Yuhan and Guo Haoyu received individual third prizes respectively. In Track 2 (Metallography Symposium), Fang Junye obtained the individual second prize, and Ren Jingyang and Yuan Siyan won individual third prizes. In Track 3 (Materials Analysis Competition), the team of Li Bingcheng and Qiu Zhuoyang claimed the group first prize; the team of Li Guanghuan and Chu Yingbo, as well as the team of Cheng Sizhe and Zhu Jianghui, were awarded group third prizes separately.

Listed on the National Discipline Competition Ranking for General Universities, the National College Students' Metallographic Skills Competition is a major national-level contest. It is also the highest-standard, most widely covered and most influential discipline competition for materials majors in China. Since its launch, Track 1 (Skills Competition) drew nearly 40,000 students from 673 universities nationwide for the preliminary round, and finally 1,522 contestants from 567 universities advanced to the national finals. For Track 2 (Metallography Symposium), 5,548 participants from 363 universities registered. After multi-round selection, 652 contestants from 269 universities gathered in Wuhan for the final. Track 3 (Materials Analysis Competition) attracted 2,068 teams from 224 universities in the preliminary stage, and 301 teams from 131 universities qualified for the finals. Both the event scale and competition intensity reached a new high.

The outstanding achievements come from months of repeated practice on grinding, polishing and etching in laboratories by the student participants. More importantly, they reflect the in-depth implementation of the college’s education philosophy: promoting teaching, learning, curriculum reform and disciplinary development through competitions. In recent years, the College of Marine Science and Engineering has continuously advanced the development of Emerging Engineering Education. It integrates the cultivation of students’ practical ability and innovative thinking into the whole teaching process, and actively encourages students to take part in high-level discipline competitions. In the future, the college will continue to take discipline competitions as an important starting point to strengthen students’ professional practical ability and craftsmanship, contributing to the cultivation of more high-quality engineering talents.
