Recently, the series events of the 15th National College Students' Metallographic Skills Competition, guided by the Teaching Advisory Board for Materials Majors of Institutions of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, successfully concluded. With solid professional competence, strong practical capabilities and outstanding innovative awareness, the delegation of Shanghai Maritime University achieved fruitful results across three tracks, winning 1 first prize, 2 second prizes and 8 third prizes in total.
Under the careful guidance of the supervisory team including An Liqiong, Fan Chunhua, Guo Yanbing, Liu Boyang and Zhou Yun from the College of Marine Science and Engineering, participating students demonstrated solid professional knowledge and exquisite practical skills in the finals. After fierce competition: in Track 1 (Metallographic Skills Competition), Zhang Jiepei won the individual second prize, while Sun Hao, Zhao Haixin, Chen Yuhan and Guo Haoyu received individual third prizes. In Track 2 (Metallography Conference), Fang Junye obtained the individual second prize, and Ren Jingyang and Yuan Siyan won individual third prizes. In Track 3 (Material Analysis Competition), the team of Li Bingcheng and Qiu Zhuoyang claimed the group first prize; the team of Li Guanghuan & Chu Yingbo and the team of Cheng Sizhe & Zhu Jianghui were awarded group third prizes.
As a national key competition listed on the National College Discipline Competition Ranking, the National College Students' Metallographic Skills Competition ranks the highest in specification, coverage and influence among domestic discipline competitions for materials majors. The scale and competition intensity of this year’s event reached a new record. For Track 1 (Metallographic Skills Competition), nearly 40,000 students from 673 universities nationwide took part in the preliminary contest, and 1,522 contestants from 567 universities advanced to the final. Track 2 (Metallography Conference attracted 5,548 participants from 363 universities. After strict selection, 652 contestants from 269 universities gathered in Wuhan for the final. For Track 3 (Material Analysis Competition), 2,068 teams from 224 universities joined the preliminary round, and 301 teams from 131 universities qualified for the final.
The outstanding achievements stem from months of arduous training of specimen grinding, polishing and etching in laboratories, and also embody the college’s educational philosophy of promoting teaching, learning, reform and construction through competitions. In recent years, the College of Marine Science and Engineering has continuously advanced the construction of Emerging Engineering Education. It integrates the cultivation of practical ability and innovative spirit into the whole process of teaching, and encourages students to take part in high-level discipline competitions. Moving forward, the college will keep leveraging discipline competitions to strengthen students’ practical skills and craftsmanship, and make efforts to cultivate more high-quality engineering and technical talents.
