As midsummer arrives and graduation songs ring out, the 2026 Graduation Ceremony and Degree Conferral Ceremony of the College of Marine Science and Engineering, Shanghai Maritime University, was held in the lecture hall of the Student Service Center on June 24. Wang Yiwei, Party Secretary of the college, Feng Daolun, Dean of the college, Zeng Ji, Chairman of the college Academic Committee, Liu Boyang, Chairman of the college Trade Union, Miao Aiqin, outstanding alumnus of the 2008 Ship Engineering class, together with department directors, teacher representatives, counselors, 2026 graduates and parent representatives gathered at the scene to witness the glorious graduation moment of the students.

The ceremony was presided over by Dong Chaoqun, Deputy Party Secretary of the college. The grand ceremony officially kicked off with the solemn national anthem. Dean Feng Daolun delivered a graduation speech. Combined with the era background of building a powerful maritime nation, he put forward four earnest exhortations for all graduates. He encouraged the students to maintain the perseverance of the deep ocean, pursue lifelong learning and be diligent seekers of knowledge; uphold the courage to surmount stormy waves, dare to explore and innovate, and be pioneers striving for new heights; foster profound affection for the blue ocean, serve the country with sincerity, and be unwavering strivers; adhere to original aspirations like regular tides, stay grateful, and be inheritors passing down the spirit of dedication. Dean Feng stated that the college will always be a warm harbor for all students. He expected graduates to leverage their professional advantages in ship and ocean engineering, port and waterway engineering, environmental engineering and marine materials, devote themselves to the marine industry, and write brilliant chapters of youth.

During the ceremony, Wang Yiwei, College Party Secretary, announced the commendation decision for outstanding graduates at the municipal and university levels of the Class of 2026, and presented honorary certificates to eight outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate graduate representatives. Meanwhile, the college held the second “Marine Science Star” award ceremony. Outstanding students in eight fields including innovation and entrepreneurship, diligent learning and progress, and academic research received awards on stage, fully demonstrating the college’s diversified educational achievements.

Miao Aiqin, the outstanding alumnus of the 2008 class, returned to campus to share her growth insights. With four insightful mottos — “work earnestly, keep pace with the times, live sincerely, and stick to your passions”, she encouraged younger students to stay down-to-earth, pursue continuous growth, balance life and work, and uphold their original aspirations.

Xu Xinning, undergraduate graduate representative, and Ma Depeng, postgraduate graduate representative, delivered speeches successively. Combining her learning experience in marine materials, Xu Xinning summarized the material spirit of “perseverance, calmness and integration”, calling on students to polish themselves and grow into “high-performance materials” for national development. Looking back on her seven-year undergraduate and postgraduate study journey, Ma Depeng expressed gratitude to supervisors for their guidance and classmates for mutual companionship. She vowed to delve into the ship engineering field and contribute her professional expertise to the development of marine equipment.

Teachers’ kindness is unforgettable. The ceremony specially set up a gratitude session for teachers. The most popular teachers and counselors selected through campus voting came on stage one after another to receive flowers from graduates. The bunches of flowers carry the sincere gratitude of students, freezing the warm moments of teacher-student companionship and mutual progress in teaching and learning.

The college also appointed a new batch of alumni grade directors, with appointment letters presented by Dean Feng Daolun, aiming to build a long-term alumni communication platform and continue the profound friendship of the Marine Science College community.

The solemn degree-tilting and oath-taking session pushed the ceremony to its climax. Eight guests including the college Party Secretary and Dean conducted degree conferral and tassel-moving for graduates one by one, symbolizing the transformation of students’ identities. All graduates took a solemn youth oath: “Be loyal, trustworthy, diligent and respectful; forge ahead for the blue ocean; serve the country with our youth; rest assured, the Party, we will take responsibility”, demonstrating the mission and responsibility of contemporary maritime youth in building a powerful maritime nation.

At the end of the ceremony, Lei Mengyu, college counselor, held the final themed roll call for the Class of 2026. With the nine-character message “Believe in light, move toward light, and become light”, she bid farewell to all graduates. She recalled precious youth memories including daily campus life, struggles in laboratories and collective activities, and earnestly encouraged students to always keep passion and move forward toward brightness.

Gathered, we burn like a blazing fire; scattered, we shine like stars. In the future, all young talents from the College of Marine Science and Engineering will carry the earnest exhortations of their alma mater and teachers, embrace their blue ocean dreams, devote themselves to the construction of a powerful maritime nation and a strong shipping country with solid work and firm responsibility, and stride toward a brilliant future amid ocean waves.
