To help students majoring in materials science clarify professional development prospects and resolve doubts concerning academic study and further education, the College of Marine Science and Engineering held the 10th session of the “Face-to-Face with Teachers” on-site Q&A activity in the activity room of Building 60 on the afternoon of June 9. Guo Yanbing from the Department of Materials Science was invited as the keynote teacher.
During the activity, Teacher Guo introduced the overall development trend and disciplinary characteristics of the materials major. He pointed out that key breakthroughs are still needed in semiconductor film materials and core equipment in China, and the industry will maintain robust development momentum. The college’s metal materials discipline features distinctive advantages in medium and low-temperature steel research, while the overall disciplinary influence and recognition remain to be further enhanced.
In terms of postgraduate entrance examination preparation and further study in other universities, Teacher Guo provided systematic and targeted suggestions covering the whole preparation process. He mentioned that the materials major has complete and moderately difficult examination resources, and undergraduate academic performance is a key assessment indicator in the re-examination stage. He also recommended high-quality online learning resources for students. Meanwhile, he encouraged students to actively apply for further study opportunities in other universities and select target institutions accurately by fully understanding supervisors’ research directions and research group profiles.
In addition, discipline competitions including the Metallographic Competition, Materials Failure Analysis Competition and Mathematical Modeling Competition play a vital role in improving students’ comprehensive abilities and enhancing their competitiveness in postgraduate re-examinations and further study applications.
Regarding employment directions and competency cultivation, Teacher Guo stated that the materials major enjoys a promising employment prospect, with graduates able to work in various state-owned manufacturing enterprises. He emphasized that continuous improvement in English proficiency is essential for both employment and further academic study, laying a solid foundation for long-term career and academic development. With rich and practical content, the activity effectively solved students’ confusion about academic study and personal development. Relying on the one-stop student community education platform, the college will continue to carry out regular academic guidance activities to support students’ all-round growth and talent development.
