To further smooth communication between teachers and students and address students’ practical doubts in academic study and scientific innovation, the 7th session of the "Face-to-Face with Teachers" tutoring activity of the College of Marine Science and Engineering was held in the activity room of Building 60 on the afternoon of May 20. Teacher Zhang Jie from the Department of Harbour and Waterway Engineering was invited as the guest speaker.
Focusing on the future development of juniors and seniors, Teacher Zhang carefully inquired about students’ plans for postgraduate entrance examinations and employment. Drawing on his years of teaching experience and in-depth insights into the development trend of the shipping industry, he systematically sorted out the strengths and key preparation requirements of different career paths. He put forward practical suggestions covering goal setting, time management and competency development, helping students make important life choices with greater confidence.
In the subsequent academic tutoring session centering on the core course Waterway Engineering, Teacher Zhang elaborated on the overall curriculum framework. His explanation covered fundamental concepts of waterway engineering; vessel and channel features as well as flow characteristics at river bends; navigation-obstructing shoals, flow pattern analysis, regulation line layout, determination of water level and channel width, and application of regulation structures for waterway improvement works; waterway dredging and river canalization; and overall design of navigation structures. Combined with past exam questions, he outlined key examination points and shared problem-solving approaches and review skills to help students consolidate professional knowledge and overcome difficult exam preparation hurdles.
In addition, Teacher Zhang gave patient and enlightening guidance to freshmen confused about major understanding, course selection and adaptation to university study rhythm. He offered detailed advice on disciplinary features, learning strategies, interest cultivation and capacity building to support freshmen to get off to a solid start in their specialized studies.Targeting the core demands of students from freshman to senior year, this tutoring activity delivered precise academic support. Going forward, relying on the One-Stop Student Community platform, the college will launch more customized tutoring programs to resolve students’ growing pains and fully safeguard their all-round development.
