Targeted Preparation for Future Careers — Phase IV of Career Launch Series for Class of 2023, College of Marine Science and Engineering
To help students of the Class of 2023 enhance their employability and master core skills for resume writing and job interviews, the college organized an evening thematic career training session on April 19 for all junior students, delivered by Ding Yi, part-time counselor of the faculty. Centered on the practical job-hunting needs of third-year undergraduates, the training offered systematic guidance covering two major sections: resume compilation and interview skills.
Starting with the fundamental function of resumes, Teacher Ding emphasized that a resume serves not only as an entry ticket for job applications but also a concentrated showcase of four years of college development. A qualified resume should be authentic, standardized, well-focused and tailored to target positions. By listing typical mistakes in students’ drafts, he explained key writing rules for personal information, educational background, practical experience, certificates and other sections. He reminded students to select content based on job requirements and quantify achievements to reflect practical value, while strictly avoiding falsification or exaggerated descriptions. Practical formatting tips were also shared to highlight personal strengths with neat layout and prevent redundant or disordered content.
When talking about interview skills, Teacher Ding elaborated on pre-interview preparation, on-site responses, etiquette management and psychological adjustment. In line with mainstream corporate recruitment procedures, he sorted out response strategies for self-introduction and specialized questions, advising students to summarize personal experiences and prepare targeted cases matching job demands. Concrete suggestions on manners, verbal expression and mood control were provided to help candidates display strengths with poise and confidence. Besides, based on the current employment market, Teacher Ding encouraged juniors to seize this critical academic year to accumulate experience in professional practice and scientific innovation, polish application documents in advance and lay a solid foundation for future internships and formal employment.
Students commented that the informative training cleared up their misunderstandings about resumes and interviews and helped them establish the mindset of early career planning and preparation. Going forward, the college will keep catering to students’ development needs with more career-planning and employment guidance activities to safeguard their job-seeking journey.
