On the afternoon of April 10, the Student Party Branch of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering jointly launched a ship knowledge popularization activity with Jianping Lingang Primary School. The teachers and students attended the themed course Marine Steel Giants: Unveiling Naval Vessels, illuminating dreams of marine science and technology through interesting popular science learning.

In class, Gu Haoyun, a doctoral candidate from the college, delivered an engaging popular science lecture themed Cutting-edge Ships: Unmanned Surface Vehicles. He opened the lesson with an interesting question about everyday unmanned devices, then vividly introduced various types of unmanned vessels and their vital applications in marine environmental governance and ecological protection. Illustrated with pictures and plain explanations, the presentation greatly aroused pupils’ enthusiasm for exploration and helped them gain brand-new insights into advanced ship technology.

At the end of the course, Party branch members presented candies and customized souvenirs of the college to outstanding students who actively thought and interacted during the lecture. They also joined different groups to kindly ask pupils about their learning experience and listen to their expectations and suggestions for future popular science activities, narrowing the distance with the children through warm interactions.

This popular science activity not only opens a window for students of Jianping Primary School to learn about ship technology, but also enables them to experience the technological charm and contemporary value of unmanned vessels via interesting interactions. Going forward, the Student Party Branch of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering will keep leveraging its disciplinary strengths to carry out diverse popular science and education activities. With concrete efforts, it helps improve youngsters’ ocean science literacy and plants seeds of loving, exploring and protecting the ocean in children’s hearts.
