On the afternoon of February 26th, the Department of Safety Science and Engineering of the School of Marine Science and Engineering held a symposium on "Liu Qian Safety Science Theory and Practice" at the school's "Liu Qian Safety Science Library". The theme of the conference was "Building a Tower of Professional Identity Based on Safety Science Thought - Commemorating the Academic Inheritance Activity of the First Anniversary of Mr. Liu Qian's Death". The event focuses on the discussion of Mr. Liu Qian's safety science ideas, mainly aimed at providing professional identity education for first-year and first-year students majoring in safety. Professor Chen Weijiong was specially invited to give a keynote speech on "Learning Liu Qian's Safety Science Thought and Striving to Be a Pioneer in Safety Technology Innovation" at the event. All teachers from the Department of Safety Science and Engineering, library related teachers who participated in the construction of the Liu Qian Safety Science Library, and some student representatives attended the event.
Professor Chen Weijiong first reviewed the life story of Mr. Liu Qian in the establishment and development of safety science, and highly praised his historical contributions. Then, he introduced in detail the great help of Mr. Liu Qian's safety science theory in proposing the "human machine environment management" safety system theory. Finally, he encouraged all teachers and students in the safety profession to learn and inherit Mr. Liu Qian's pioneering spirit.
Teacher Chen Hao from the library mainly introduced the origin of the Liu Qian Safety Science Library, describing the historical process from preparation in early 2011 to the official establishment of the Liu Qian Safety Science Library at Shanghai Maritime University in 2017. From the perspective of library construction, he talked about the exemplary value of the Liu Qian Safety Science Library as the first subject themed library in our university library. From the perspective of historical records, he talked about the historical value of the Liu Qian Safety Science Library's collection of documents, and from the perspective of humanistic education, he praised Mr. Liu Qian's noble character as a pioneer in the development of the discipline.
Jiao Yu, the head of the Department of Safety Science and Engineering, introduced to everyone how Mr. Liu Qian, as the founder of China's safety discipline, devoted his entire life to promoting the safety discipline from the edge to the core. He elaborated on Mr. Liu Qian's contributions from three aspects: theoretical foundation, disciplinary breakthroughs, and ideological enlightenment. He encouraged the safety personnel of Hainan University to be brave enough to inherit the legacy of their predecessors, shoulder historical missions, and build a safety profession with maritime characteristics.
The head of the safety discipline, Wang Jinhui, reviewed his interactions with Mr. Liu Qian and outlined the process in which Liu Qian's ideas inspired and guided the construction and development of our school's maritime safety discipline. Call on teachers and students of the security discipline to take the strategy of building a strong maritime nation as an opportunity, as the new generation of maritime security personnel, uphold Mr. Liu Qian's safety science thinking, forge ahead, further promote the security cause, and serve national strategy, industry fields, and social development.
Finally, during the teacher-student questioning stage, representatives from undergraduate and graduate students exchanged and discussed with the attending teachers about the ranking, employment intentions, and safety ability cultivation of the safety engineering major at Hainan University. They all expressed that this event further enhanced their understanding and recognition of the safety engineering major.
Mr. Liu Qian passed away on February 26, 2024 at a hospital in Beijing at the age of 91. Mr. Liu Qian is the pioneer of safety science in China, who established the theory of safety science discipline and formed the concept of safety system. He facilitated the establishment of a three-level education system for safety talents, including bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, as well as a professional title system for safety engineers. He also founded the Chinese Journal of Safety Science and contributed to the national standard for classification codes of safety science and technology disciplines. Previously, Mr. Liu Qian donated over 1500 volumes/pieces of lifelong literature and items related to safety science to our school. On May 20, 2017, our school established the "Liu Qian Safety Science Library" in the campus library.
