Recently, Dr Chan Li Su, a teacher in the Department of Marine Environment in the College of Ocean Science and Engineering, published a paper entitled Will the landscape composition and Socio-Economy in Sustainable Cities and Society, a top international journal of engineering technology development of coastal cities have an impact on the marine cooling effect? The landscape composition of coastal cities and the effects of socioeconomic development on ocean cooling effects.

This paper uses a geographically weighted regression model system to explore the effects of land use, socio-economic development and meteorological conditions on the ocean cooling effect in coastal cities, and finds out the effective cooling intensity of coastal cities and the complex mechanism of different land use types on the cooling intensity. The results show that the ocean cooling intensity has significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity. In addition, high vegetation coverage, diversity of land types and complexity of landscape shapes all contribute to increasing ocean cooling ranges and mitigating surface temperatures. Although interconnected and dense impervious water surfaces tend to raise surface temperatures and provide greater ocean cooling, they also affect the inland flow of cold air. It is worth noting that the ocean cooling effect is better in areas with better economic development and higher population density. The exploration of the effective ocean cooling effect is conducive to providing theoretical basis for the planning and construction of coastal cities and the efficient utilization of the attached ocean and coastal zone resources.

Sustainable Cities and Society is a top journal in the field of engineering technology. It aims to design, understand and promote environmentally sustainable development and socially adaptable cities from the perspective of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research. The latest impact factor in 2022 is 10.70. It has a high influence and reputation in its field.
