Recently, the 16th Shanghai College Students Chemistry Experiment Competition and Chemistry Experiment Innovation Design Competition was held in Fengxian Campus of Shanghai Normal University. Chen Jiale, Tan Hao and Chen Xingyu, majoring in materials science and engineering from the College of Ocean Science and Engineering of the University, and Chen Xingyu, majoring in environmental engineering, won the special prize for their popular science project Science and Education ship model driven by Photovoltaic hydrogen production Coupled fuel cell.

The chemical experiment innovation design competition includes three courses: new experiment, improved experiment and popular science experiment. The project designed and produced a ship model with solar energy as the only energy source, which is composed of photovoltaic hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and fuel cells. First, photovoltaic panels and proton exchange membranes electrolyze water modules, converting solar energy into hydrogen and storing it in a homemade hydrogen storage space. The hydrogen is then converted into electricity in an electrochemical reaction in a fuel cell to power the entire ship. This scientific and educational ship model shows the bright prospect of hydrogen energy and fuel cells applied in ships and shipping, and at the same time conveys the concept of reducing carbon emissions and green shipping to the public, providing beneficial reference for the application of hydrogen fuel cell ships.

Ms. Yao Xin from the College of Ocean Science and Engineering was the instructor of the project. Ms. Yao Xin was invited by the organizing committee to deliver a speech for the representatives of the winning teachers after the competition.

The 16th Shanghai College Students Chemistry Experiment Competition and Chemistry Experiment Innovation Design Competition was sponsored by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, undertaken by Shanghai Normal University and co-organized by Shanghai College Chemistry Experiment Teaching Steering Committee. Nearly 100 teachers and students from 19 universities in the Yangtze River Delta, including Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University and University of Science and Technology of China participated in the competition. Twenty teams from the chemistry experiment innovation design competition took part in the final.
