Recently, Professor Pan Shunqi from Cardiff University was invited to deliver a keynote lecture on Climate Change and Challenges facing Coastal Engineering by Shanghai Total Penetration Frontier Science Research Base of Far-reaching Offshore Energy and Power. More than 50 persons in charge of relevant functional departments, colleges, research bases and graduate students attended the conference.

A better understanding of the regional impacts of global climate change, which poses serious and frequent threats to coastal and estuarine regions with rapid socio-economic development, is essential for the development of effective and sustainable management and disaster prevention measures. Professor Pan introduced the latest research achievements on global climate change (UKCP8) and the recent development of coastal engineering research in the UK, as well as the challenges faced by climate and environmental change. The lecture also included examples of coastal engineering research in the UK. The lecture is instructive to the study of coastal engineering in China under the condition of climate change.

In the interactive session, Professor Pan expressed his own views on the relevant questions raised by the participants, and had a warm and extensive exchange and discussion with Professor Zhang Hongsheng of the College of Ocean Science and Engineering and the teachers and students present. Professor Zhang Hongsheng and other teachers and students discussed ocean energy generation, wave generation and the application of the third generation numerical model of phoenix wave with Professor Pan.

The conference was co-sponsored by the College of Ocean Science and Engineering and Shanghai Full Penetration Offshore Energy Frontier Research Base (Education).
