Zhiming Chao, born in 1991, is a Professor (Exceptional Promotion) and Doctoral Supervisor at Shanghai Maritime University, serving concurrently as Vice Dean of the School of Ocean Science and Engineering and Director of the Department of Harbor, Waterway and Coastal Engineering. He is the recipient of the Shanghai May Fourth Youth Medal and a Nominee for the Young Scientist Award of Maritime Power. Professor Chao has been selected into 5 national and provincial-level high-level talent programs, including:The 9th Young Elite Scientists Funding Program by China Association for Science and Technology (CAST, funded by CAST), Shanghai Overseas High-Level Young Talent Program (Shanghai Overseas Excellent Youth Scholar Project, funding: ¥1,000,000), The 1st Young Elite Scientists Funding Program by the Chinese Society of Navigation, Shanghai Talent Recruitment Program, Shanghai Science and Technology Commission High-Level Talent Program.He also holds multiple academic positions, such as: Director of the China Geosynthetics Association and Deputy Secretary-General of its International Cooperation Committee, Member of the Young Professionals Committee of the International Geosynthetics Society, Member of the 1st Young Expert Committee of the Chinese Society of Navigation, Member of the Youth Working Committee of the China Geosynthetics Engineering Association, Member of the Cold Region Soil Mechanics Branch of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering.
Professor Chao specializes in port and marine geotechnical engineering, mechanical properties and reinforcement technology of calcareous sand, and application of artificial intelligence in marine geotechnical engineering. Over the past 5 years, he has achieved remarkable results in related fields: Published over 40 SCI-indexed papers, including more than 30 as the first or corresponding author in international top journals such as Geotextiles and Geomembranes (IF=4.7), Construction and Building Materials (IF=7.4), Ocean Engineering (IF=4.6), and Underground Space (IF=8.2). These include 6 ESI Highly Cited Papers and 23 JCR Q1 papers.Published 7 EI-indexed journal papers, all as the first author.Obtained over 10 authorized national invention patents, including 9 as the first inventor.Won multiple awards, such as the Chinese Society of Navigation Science and Technology Progress Award (Ranking first), China Port Association Youth Science and Technology Award, Shanghai Marine Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award, 2020 UK Best Student Paper Award of the International Geosynthetics Society (the only recipient in the UK), and Shanghai Municipal Education Commission Merit Award.He has presided over 16 research projects with a total research fund of over ¥5,000,000, including national, provincial, and ministerial-level projects:1 National Natural Science Foundation of China (General Program) and 1 Youth Program,1 China Postdoctoral Science Foundation Special Grant and 1 General Grant and 7 provincial-level projects (e.g., Shanghai Natural Science Foundation General Program, Shanghai Science and Technology Commission Rising-Star Program, Shanghai Science and Technology Commission Soft Science Research Program).
