I. Educational Objectives
This program is designed to equip professionals with solid theoretical foundation, a rigorous technical basis in safety science and technology and a system of safety supervision and management skills. Graduates are expected to be capable of safety engineering work in design, research, assessment and counseling, safety supervision and technical management, mostly in the shipping and shipbuilding industries, and in other cases in administration, machinery manufacturing, chemical industry, energy, transportation and other industries.
II. Education Requirement
Accomplished and innovative talents in safety engineering are needed to keep up with the growing demand of social and economic development in the 21st century. Besides learning engineering prerequisites, undergraduates are supposed to acqurie:
1. to establish a solid intellectual basis of natural sciences and engineering technology as required by the program, and a fair understanding of the humanities and social sciences;
2.to master the fundamental theories, knowledge and techniques of safety science, engineering and skills.
3.to be capable of conducting work in safety engineering, such as design, research, detection, assessment, supervision, management, etc.;
4.to have a strong abilities of graphing, computer aided design and computer aided
data processing and analysis;
5.to be fluent in English, and able to read English literature of the discipline;
6.to master the basic methods of literature search and information retrieval;
7.to be informed about the frontier and dynamics of ship safety.
III. Length of Schooling, Academic Credits, Degrees Conferred
Length of Schooling: 4 years
Academic Credits Required: 160 credits
Degrees Conferred: Bachelor of Engineering
IV. Curriculum and Credit Distribution
1. General Education Courses (54 credits)
Requirements: 44 credits for compulsory courses;10 credits for elective courses
2.Basic Disciplinary Courses (42 credits)
Requirements: the total of 42 credits for basic courses in the discipline.
3. Specialty-Oriented Courses(55 credits)
Requirements: 40 credits for compulsory specialty-oriented courses; 15 credits for elective specialty-oriented courses.
4. Optional Courses(6 credits)
Requirements: 6 credits.
5. Second Class(Extracurricular Activities)(3 credits)
Requirements: 3 credits
