I. Program Introduction

The first grade discipline of master degree in Hydraulic Engineering contains three postgraduate mastery programs of Harbor, Coastal and Offshore Engineering, Hydraulic Structure Engineering, Hydrology and water resources, in which the Coastal and Offshore Engineering is a key program of Shanghai Maritime University. This program is proud to have 22 faculties, including 9 professors and 7 associate professors; plus 90 percent doctor degree owners (including post-doctorate).The discipline is doing research on several directions such as harbor structure engineering and geotechnical engineering, harbor and coastal water dynamics, hydraulic engineering structure security and durability evaluation, Offshore disaster prevention and urban flood control engineering, offshore water area water resources and water environment, Marine safety and disaster prevention, etc. The program has been undertaking several National Natural Science Founding projects, sub-tasks of National 863 projects, a number of scientific research projects of provincial and municipal government institutions, leading to winning 4 items of provincial science and technology progress prize, publication of many works and paper, and acquisition of patents and the copyright of computer software and equipments. It has become the high-level professional and technical professional talents training base in harbor, coastal, offshore and ocean engineering to the construction of Shanghai international shipping center, the graduates mainly work for the colleges and universities, engineering design, construction and project supervision enterprises and administrative departments related to the harbor, coastal and offshore engineering, hydraulic engineering, civil engineering, Marine engineering.

 

II. Program Objective

i. Should   be loving the motherland, law-abiding, honest, having a strong sense of professionalism and good character and quality, positive for the socialist construction with Chinese characteristic service

 

ii. Should be full development, morally, intellectually, and physically. Students should be expected to have a solid theoretical foundation and systematic professional knowledge and skills,  understand the development level of modern theory and application, be familiar with the dynamic of relational projects development  of  home and abroad in science research as well as mastery of a foreign language, including abilities of listening ,speaking ,reading, writing.

 

iii. The program aims for strict academic environment, honest and creative scientific spirit. Based on the characteristic of The marinewithin the research area of Hydrology and water resources, the program is designed to train advanced technical talents of marine, water conservancy, environment, resource, zoology, shipping, who have a abilities in science research and engineering technical , capable of charging independently in special technical , management and consultation and master general method of scientific research and engineering practice. In addition, students are also required to familiarize themselves with modern information techniques, as well as good computer and information management skills.

 

iv. Should have innovative, engineering practice ability and entrepreneurial quality.

Literature reading:

According to research direction, the graduate students should read a certain amount of domestic and foreign materials with the tutor’s science research and the need of the dissertation, to grasp the research frontier of the subjects development.

 

VI. Postgraduate Education for Practical Applications

The Harbor, Coastal and Offshore Engineering, Hydraulic structure engineering, Hydrology and water resources are strongly practical specialtyies Therefore, the education of practical application reflects the level of the postgraduate education. Based on the academic level, great importance should be attached to the cultivation of practical and compound talents. Through the study of theories and participation in scientific research and engineering practices, students are expected to be familiar with  scientific and engineering project standards and procedures, and to improve the ability of doing scientific and practical work. Under the guides of their tutors, students are expected to master the applications and techniques of engineering project, and have the practical capability of carrying out scientific research and engineering programs. The program can provide the training and simulating analysis practice of a range of engineering project analytical software(ABQUASFLUENTPFC,MIKER, Geotechnical SWS-3multi-row digital image analytical program packages ,GIS, Geodog, Minvt, DPDM technique software, etc ), and related equipment and lab for physical simulation model and chemical experiment equipment. Through learning and using hydrology dynamic numerical simulation, numerical simulation of water environment,  statistics and decision model, etc, training the professional skills of using the mathematical method and modern methods to solve the problem of scientific research and engineering. Take part in the scientific research project of the experimental research work supervisor, participate in tutors's engineering research project of engineering practice and research work. Pay attention to cultivate the spirit of devotion to science, pay attention to cultivate the ability to access to information, pay attention to train the ability of scientific research innovation, pay attention to cultivate scientific research practice ability.
