Proposal on the Course Plan of Postgraduate Master Degree of Hydraulic Structure Engineering

I.  Program Introduction
The postgraduate mastery program of Hydraulic Structure Engineering started its recruitment in the autumn of 2012 as a part of the first grade discipline of master degree in Hydraulic Engineering at Shanghai Maritime University, specializing in research in Hydraulic Engineering Structure Safety and Durability Evaluation Theory and Method, Numerical Analysis and Optimization Design of Ocean and Hydraulic Engineering Structure, Offshore Disaster Prevention and Urban Flood Control Works. The program has 10 faculties including 4 professors and 2 associate professors; plus 9 doctor degree owners (including post-doctorate), along with research-related laboratory facilities and analytical software. The program has been undertaking national natural science funding projects, sub-program of “863” project and a number of scientific research projects of provincial and municipal government institutions, leading to winning the honor of provincial "Science and Technology Advancement Prize", publication of many works and paper, and acquisition of patents and the copyright of computer software. It is designed to educate for seaport, ship channel, and offshore engineering projects, marine engineering related colleges, engineering design, engineering projects implementation and supervision companies and institutions, and course related department in terms of education, and technical and administrative management. 
 
II.  Program Objective
The training objectives of this program should adhere to the principle of socialist orientation for full development, morally, intellectually and physically, carrying out the guiding ideology of " toward modernization, toward the world and toward the future ". The program is designed to train advanced technical talents and university faculties, being able to engage in large or medium-scaled hydraulic structures and soft foundation design,structural analysis and experimental research in science and technology.Specific requirements are:
1. Students should adhere to the Party's basic line, show love to the motherland, obey rules and regulations and build a strong sense of career responsibility and good research ethics.Moreover, Keep great personalities, honest and trust ,and health in both physically and mentally.
2. Based on a solid theoretical foundation and systematic knowledge chain, students are expected to have a strong self-learning ability and wide range of knowledge , as well as the academic foundation and research skills for further study in order to adapt to the needs of the scientific and technological progress and social development,. It is also required to master a foreign language.
3. Be with a spirit of innovation ,practical ability and entrepreneurial qualities.

Description
Literature reading:
According to research direction, the graduate students should read a certain amount of domestic and foreign materials with the tutor’s science research and the need of the dissertation, to grasp the research frontier of the subjects development.
 
VI. Postgraduate Education for Practical Applications
The program of Hydraulic structure engineeringlays much emphasis on practice, and therefore, the education of practical application is quite reflective of the postgraduate education.It would be ideal to design course on the basis of academic teaching, while emphasizing the cultivation of practical and inter-discipline talents. The course is designed to provide students with familiarization of scientific and engineering project standard and procedures, and opportunity of practicing scientific research and practical capability, through the study of theories and participation of scientific research and engineering practices. Under the guide of their supervisors, students are expected master the applications and techniques of engineering project, and the practical capability of scientific research programs and engineering programs. The course is meant to provide a range of engineering project analytical software (ABQUAS,FLUENT,PFC, geotechnical SWS-3multi-row digital image analytical program packages ) training and simulating analysis practice, and relating physics simulating laboratory equipment and venues. The design of the program put emphasis on the concept scientific devotion spirit, information acquisition ability, and scientific research creation and practical capabilities.
