I. Program Introduction
The Master Program of Harbor, Coastal and Offshore Engineering is part of the first grade discipline of master degree in Hydraulic Engineering at Shanghai Maritime University. The program, which is the key discipline at Shanghai Maritime University specializing in Port Engineering Structures, Geotechnical Engineering, Ocean Engineering Structures, Port Engineering Planning, Analysis of Ocean Engineering Flow Field and Ocean Environmental Planning and Management, started to admit students in fall, 2004. The department has 14 teachers including 7 professors and 3 associate professors.12 teachers have the Doctor’s (Postdoctoral) degree. The department is equipped with experimental devices for research and the corresponding analysis software and has undertaken the National Natural Science Foundation projects, sub-tasks of National 863 projects and many provincial and city level projects. The department also has been awarded the provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress awards and the copyrights of literature publishing, paper publishing, patents and computer software. The students are mainly employed in Navigation Channel, Coastal and Ocean Engineering projects, by the universities and colleges of Ocean Engineering, enterprises and public institutions of engineering design, engineering construction and engineering supervision, and departments of related education, technology management and administrative management.
 
II.  Program Objective
The education of this program aims at full development of moral, intellect, and physicality. Students are expected to have a solid theoretical foundation and systematic knowledge chain as well as mastery of a foreign language, which enables them to carry out scientific research, academic education, and engineering practice and operation independently. 
1.Students should deeply understand the basic principles of Marxism, uphold the Four Cardinal Principles, show love to motherland, obey rules and regulations, and learn to behave themselves. It is also essential to build a strong sense of career responsibility and devotion sprit as well as sublime morality and quality so as to get prepared for the Socialist modernization construction.
2.The program aims for strict academic environment, honest and creative scientific spirit. Based on the characteristic of “Greater Civil Engineering”within the research area of Port, Coastal and Offshore Engineering, the program is designed to train advanced technical talents of Port, Coastal and Offshore Engineering, who have a solid theoretical foundation and systematic knowledge chain , capable of applying theories to practice, and master the methodology of scientific research and engineering project practical implementation. In addition, students are also required to familiarize themselves with modern information techniques as well as good computer and information management skills. It is also required for the students to master one or more foreign languages, for one of which they would have high proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

According to research direction, the graduate students should read a certain amount of domestic and foreign materials with the tutor’s science research and the need of the dissertation, to grasp the research frontier of the subjects development.
 
VI. Postgraduate Education for Practical Applications

 

The Harbor, Coastal and Offshore Engineering is a strongly practical specialty. Therefore, the education of practical application reflects the level of the postgraduate education. Based on the academic level, great importance should be attached to the cultivation of practical and compound talents. Through the study of theories and participation in scientific research and engineering practices, students are expected to be familiar with  scientific and engineering project standards and procedures, and to improve the ability of doing scientific and practical work. Under the guides of their supervisors, students are expected to master the applications and techniques of engineering project, and have the practical capability of carrying out scientific research and engineering programs. The program can provide the training and simulating analysis practice of a range of engineering project analytical software(ABQUAS,FLUENT,PFC, geotechnical SWS-3multi-row digital image analytical program packages ), and related equipment and lab for physical simulation model. The design of the program also puts emphasis on the devotion spirit for science, information acquisition ability, scientific research creation and practical capabilities.
