1 Synopsis of subjects

This program was authorized to grant both the PhD and master’s degrees for “Transportation safety & environmental engineering” in 2013 and stared to enroll postgraduate students in the following years. It is one of the 2nd level disciplines belonging to the “transportation engineering” discipline in Shanghai Maritime University. The content of the program is consisted of Transportation Safety Engineering, Traffic Environmental Management and Traffic Pollution Control Technology. There is one vigorously experienced team of teachers to serve this program, including 8 professors and 11 associate professors, more than 80% of them have Doctorial degree. They have successfully completed a great number of research projects, e.g. National Natural Science Fund projects, provincial or municipal fund projects as well as scientific research projects supported by enterprises and institutions. Other notable achievements are concerning with published books and academic research papers, enrolled patents and computer software copyrights, etc. The graduates of this program will mainly engage their work in port & shipping, marine enterprises and institutions as well as government departments, conducting security & environmental protection related tasks of scientific research, technology development, planning and design, project management, administrative management, and other related work.

Note

Literature reading:

According to their own need of dissertation research, which should be integrating with the supervisors’ research, postgraduates should read a certain amount of Native or Foreign language material during the period of graduate study in this discipline, so as to keep up with the development of the discipline frontiers.

6 Postgraduates’ practical ability development for this program

Transport Safety and Environment Engineering is a discipline of integrating the professional basic theory with engineering practice, while the practical ability is an important measure of graduate education effect. At the time of scientific research personnel training, engineering talent cultivation needs more emphases. The practical ability development program is implemented through student’s participating in some essential practical activities. For instance in research project, proposal presentation, field investigation, monitoring experiment and field test etc. are all suggested in the program. The other concerns for the program to develop the practical ability of student are also including Engineering design and teaching assistant practice.
